The Coffee Lab

The Coffee Lab is the result of STUDIO MaW's first commission: to design one of the smallest cafés in the world. We created a disorienting sense of space through a dimensional flattening of Donatello's David arranged on several deepening planes of classical cues and ornamentations to force interpretation on simultaneous two dimensional planes, perceptively deepening the 2m x 1m space.

David and his ornaments were unfolded onto a two dimensional plane, then re-enclosed onto the surface of the Coffee Lab's interior to generate a lighthearted, rhythmic progression that persistently changes shape with the viewer's eye as it travels along the walls and ceiling.
